Nowadays many aquatic systems have high level of ammonia due to anthropogenic related pressures, such as urban waste disposal and fertilizer leaching. Ammonia is considered as the greatest pressures to aquaculture life in the immediate vicinity of wastewater outfalls”. It is toxic substance and it affect mostly fishes, since the metabolism of fish and crustacean can be severely damaged by short term contact with high level of ammonia. It also affects the nitrification process, which causes further increase of ammonia in the system. Moreover, ammonia can be converted to nitrite which is also toxic to aquatic species. Few chemicals are found effective in removing the ammonia from the pond or lake where the fishes or other aquatic species are cultivated. Among them zeolite has been proved capable of removing ammonia and has been applied to freshwater systems for many decades. But this material become ineffective in sea water as the concentration of ions impede its uptake of ammonia.

In recent decades, another alternative is found which can work both in freshwater and seawater. The extract of Yucca shidigera proves to very effective in removing ammonia concentration in aquaculture. Yucca extract has also been used as an additive to ruminant diets to control rumen fermentation and to reduce ruminal ammonia concentration.
